BOISE, Idaho (CBS2) — The longest serving Democrat in Idaho's legislature announced her retirement Wednesday, and endorsed a candidate to fill her position.
After 18 years representing Idaho's House District 17, Rep. Sue Chew, D-Boise, said she'll be stepping down after the next session.
"I don't really do anything without thinking about my family. If it wasn't for my mom and dad I wouldn't have instilled in me this idea of giving to my community as much as I do, because it's something that they've always insisted on," said Chew.
When asked what she will do now, Chew said, "You know, the work has just begun. My volunteers are going to be out there listening to people."
Chew also announced she's supporting Democrat Natalie MacLachlan for the position. She's a middle school art and theater teacher.
MacLachlan ran to unseat Rep. John Vander Woude, R-Nampa, in District 22 in 2022. She garnered about 37 percent of the vote.
"I'm so fortunate to have the endorsement of this woman who has served for so long," said MacLachlan. "She's done incredible in the legislature, and it's been an honor to watch over the years, and it's an even greater honor to try and follow in her footsteps."
